continental convergence
Convergence accommodated by lateral extrusion
In the late 70's, Tapponnier proposed that convergence is essentially accommodated by the lateral escape of continental blocks away from the indenter. Continental blocks are bounded by strike-slip faults accommodating hundreds of kilometer of displacement. This model successfully explains the presence of lithospheric scale strike-slip faults such as the Altyn Tagh fault and the Red River fault.
