Convergence accommodated by lateral extrusion | ||||||||||
In the late 70's, Tapponnier proposed that convergence is essentially accommodated by the lateral escape of continental blocks away from the indenter. Continental blocks are bounded by strike-slip faults accommodating hundreds of kilometer of displacement. This model successfully explains the presence of lithospheric scale strike-slip faults such as the Altyn Tagh fault and the Red River fault. |
