continental convergence
Convergence accommodated by shortening and thickening
Upon the closure of oceanic areas, convergence between continental landmasses is accommodated by crustal thickening and the subduction of sub-continental lithospheric mantle. The action of gravitational forces is responsible for the migration of crustal thickening away from the suture zone. The geometry of crustal thickening is that of crustal-scale accretionary prism whose asymmetry reflects the original vergence of the oceanic subduction.
