continental convergence
Convergence accommodated by subduction
Subduction zones are the locus of accretion of juvenile crust underplated. The physical experiment on the right illustrates the change of subduction angle from steep to shalow during ongoing convergence (Shemenda, 1996; Subduction zones). As the mantle wedge above of the slab closes-down we expect the volcanic activity to cease.
