A convergent margin involving the subduction of an oceanic plate develops: A trench (deep valley), an accretionary wedge consisting of oceanic sediments, a volcanic arc, and possibly a back-arc basin.
The distance between the trench, and the volcanic arc depends on the subduction angle (pictures on the left). Steep subduction angle will favour the opening of a backarc basin (picture below).
Eventually, closure of the ocean results in the collision between the two continental margins (bottom right pictures) and the formation of on orogen.
