The elastic-plastic-viscous lithosphere
Ductile flow
Ductile flow – At high temperatures in the lower lithosphere deformation takes place by ductile flow. In rock mechanics, this type of deformation is referred to as plastic deformation.
On the right, marine deep seismic refraction lines on the NW shelf of Australia. Note that upper (brittle) and lower (ductile) crust show differential extension, indicating ductile (plastic) flow (from A. Goncharov, Geoscience Australia).
