Brittle vs ductile deformation: The role of temperature, composition and strain rate...
Objects deform as continuum (continuous deformation) or through fracturation (discontinuous or brittle deformation).
Discontinuous deformation:
• Case 1: The media is pre-fractured, its strength depends on the frictional strength of pre-existing fractures.

• Case 2: The media has no pre-existing fractures, its strength depends on its constitution in particular on the cohesion of its grain.

Continuous deformation:
• Elastic deformation
• Plastic deformatoin
• Viscous deformation

Each mode of flow has a characteristic flow curve that we will study first before to look for natural evidences.
