continental convergence
Convergence accommodated by lithospheric strike-slip faults
New Zealand Alpine fault is close to the boundary between the North margin of the Campbell Plateau (including the Chatham Rise) and the Tasman Sea. The Alpine Fault is a dextral transpressive transform fault linking two trenches of opposite vergence: The east-vergin Hjort Trench (South of Macquarie Island) and the west-verging Kermadec Trench to the East of the North Island.
