sedimentary basins Rift basins - Structural aspects -
Pull-apart basin.
a) conserves crustal area, no regional thickening or thinning
b) often associated with vertical fault planes (some are listric), give straight map expression against topography
c) secondary associated features - where transform bends
1. pull apart basin
2. thrust faults - transverse ranges e.g., San Gabriel Mtns, CA
d) can cause wrench faults/zones- large scale strike-slip faults e.g., New Zealand, Alaska, Israel
e) may be caused by extrusion tectonics (indentation) - complex wrench zones e.g., collision between India and Asia.
