The tectonic regime is here in extension. This tectonic regime is characterized by σ1 being vertical. Stylolitic joints are therefore horizontal, whereas extensional fracture are vertical. Note that horizontal stylolitic joints and vertical extensional fracture can also develop during the compaction of sediments. |
