STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY

Faults and Fractures

The sketches on the right illustrate some example of faults. In simple case (normal, reverse, strike-slip) one of the principal stress axis is vertical, in which case the stress regime is said to be Andersonian.. The geometry of faults can however be a bit more complicated and therefore more interesting.

The slip can be oblique to the strike of the fault (fault kinematic can be either normal sinistral, normal dextral, reverse sinistral, reverse dextral).

The offset can vary along strike, the fault is said to be rotational and described as a scissor fault.

Finally fault planes are not always planar surfaces but can be curved. A listric fault has its dip that decreases with depth.
