Fault related microstructures: Slickenlines (or striaes) represent mechanical striations that develop during faulting.  Slickenlines give the direction of slip on fault planes.  They are oriented by their pitch: the angle between the strike line (= an horizontal line on the fault plane) and the striae.  The pitch can have any value in the range of 0 (horizontal striae) to 90º (striae perpendicular to the strike line). The picture below shows slickenlines on a fault plane in limestones.  The fault is a dip slip fault since the pitch of the slickenlines is close to 90º.  A trained eyes will also deduced the sense of motion, but we will see that later...
