Introduction
You will complete at least two field exercises as part of your assessment. The first exercise involves structural analysis in folded and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks; You will map a large fold on an enlarged aerial photograph and carefully measure the changes in strike and dip of sedimentary bedding across the fold. You will plot these data onto a stereonet, classify the fold, interpret the interlimb angle of the fold, and calculate the pi-axis.
A second exercise will be completed at "the waterfall". Here, the structure is more complex with evidence for multiple phases of deformation that you will make measurements of and interpret using a stereonet. You will be given more information on these exercises in the field. It is assumed that you will know how to plot structural data on a stereonet.

Exercise1: Orientation Analysis: Introduction to Stereographic and Equal-Area Projections
Objectives: To learn to plot linear and planar elements distributed in a 3D space. To learn to use stereographic projection to infer fold geometries and the strike, dip and dip direction of their axial plane and the plunge and plunge direction (also called "trend") of their B axis. To analyse fold in aerial photograph, to observe in the field fold related microstructures.
You can download the exercise sheet here: Exercise 1
Here is the fold we will visit:

Below is a detail of the above aerial photograph...
