The Alps is the result of the ongoing convergence between the Adriatic micro-plate and the European continent. Convergence initiated sometimes after the mid-Cretaceous. The horizontal shortening is constrained in between 63 to 73%. Involved in the collision: the south passive margin of the European plate, the Briançonnais terranes, the Piemont ocean, the Austroalpine terrans, and the Adriatic microplate.
