Rift basins - Thermal Implication: Lithospheric thinning and total subsidence may vary significantly across a sedimentary basin. An example from three wells in the Central Graben in the North Sea (from Sclater and Christie, 1980) illustrates that here the extension factor β varies from 1.25 to 2 from the basin flanks to the basin center, equivalent to stretching by 25% and 100%, respectively.
