PRACTICAL 1: TOPOGRAPHIC CONTOURS, STRUCTURAL CONTOURS AND GEOLOGICAL MAPS.

A line is oriented by its Plunge (2-digit number) and Plunge Direction (3-digit number), or alternatively -when the line is within a plane - by its pitch and pitch direction.

A plane is oriented by its strike (3-digit number), its dip (2-digit number), and its dip direction (geographic direction). Example: 030-50 SE.

A linear element (lineation, fold axis etc) is oriented by its plunge (2-digit number) and plunge direction (3-digit number). Example: 12-025. The plunge direction is also called "trend".

When a linear feature is carried by a plane (bedding, foliation, fault plane ets) it can be oriented by its pitch (2-digit number) and the pitch direction (geographic direction). Example 65-NE.
