Geothermal energy: In general temperature increases systematically with depth, at a rate of approximately 3ºC per 100 m. Temperatures at the base of the continental crust can range from 200ºC to 1000ºC. Unfortunately most of the crustal heat is too deep to be artificially tapped. Only in favorable locations where thermal anomaly exists (plate boundaries, volcanic provinces) does the temperature is high enough at a reasonnable depth.
In those favorable location heat can be extracted by pumping cold water into the ground and collecting steam to power turbine. |
