The structural sketch below illustrates the kind of strain field that characterises domes and basins patterns. Strong vertical flattening occurs at the contact between two adjacent domes, whereas strong vertical constriction (linear elongation) develops where three of more domes interfer. Overall this strain field is characterised by a large variability in strain intensity, strain orientation, and strain shape.
This regional strain field can be interpreted as the consequence of multiple emplacement of granitic domes and coeval sinking of greenstone covers. Vertical linear structures (constriction) develop at foliation triple junctions (yellow triangle in the sketch bellow) where three or more strain aureoles, related to the emplacement of individual dome, interfer. |
