Structural characteristics of transform margins
Tectonic regime along transform margins varies from transpression (strike-slip with a component of convergence), to transtension (strike-slip with a component of divergence). Consequently, transform margins show a large variety of structures including normal and reverse faults. When strike-slip motion is largely dominant, strike slip faults with a vertical foliation and horizontal lineations are the dominant structural features. However, as illustrated by the sand-box experiments below vertical displacements of faulted block do occur. The picture on the right show the trace of the Alpine Fault in New Zealand. Note the strong asymmetry of the topography.
