Axial planar cleavage in symmetric folds (Paragon, Broken Hill, NSW)

On the right: The successive dark an pale grey layers represent successive sedimentary layers. The beds are folded. The folds have a near-vertical penetrative axial planar cleavage. Bottom picture: The cleavage plane is at right angle to the sedimentary layering. This can only happen in the hinge of folds. In the limbs the angle between the cleavage and the beddings is smaller (see sketch below). In isoclinal folds this angle is zero as the axial planar cleavage is parallel to the limbs.
