Reverse faults and thrusts in sand-box and numerical experiments

The movie on the right is a digitized version of a physical experiment involving the shortening of a sand box.  It shows the development of a sequence of reverse fault and the progressive stacking of several units.  Newly formed reverse faults develop in front and below the old ones.

Along with physical experiments, numerical experiments enable the investigation of simplified geological systems.  The picture below (From Beaumont's Group in Halifax) illustrates the final stage of the development of a thrust fault above a rigid basement.  The thrust fault merge with an horizontal fault (a decollement), folding develop in front and behind the thrust.
