The picture on the right will help you to underestand what is the line of strike, and what is the dip of a plane. 
On the picture below (a creek near Broken Hill) the strike line of the bedding planes is parallel to the contact between the water surface and the bedding planes.  Geologists use a compass with a bubble level to define an horizontal plane.
